Interview with Gil from 'Gil & the Electric Vampires'!

Welcome back, folks!
I know, it's been a while since I last added something new to this Blog... but to make up for that, this time I have something special for you! It's time to present my first ever interview held with a band - and also my first ever try in translating Italian to English! You can find the Italian version by scrolling down a bit... ;)

So please be nice and easy and say a big & warm welcome to Gil Minoni and his project 'Gil & the Electric Vampires' from Milan! You should really take a look at the video to his first single 'Bulletproof' before reading the interview - it's worth it!

So, what do you say? Is this a great piece of real rock n' roll or what?! Actually, this is really the kind of band that I'm always looking for and I would love to see them in concert one time or another - this sound makes me wanna party and hold a drink in my hand and there's nothing wrong about that ;)

R: So, Gil, first of all let me thank you for the time and dedication! It's great to be able to introduce a new section to my blog and interview an artist whose music I really enjoy so far! 'Bulletproof' plays on heavy rotation here at my place!
I read that you formed the project in 2016 - does this mean that you write and arrange all the songs on your own or is there more like a 'band-situation' to it? Do you play in other bands/projects as well?

G: Ciao René! Thanks to you for the space dedicated to us and for your kindness. It's an honor being interviewed for your blog!
Yes, 'Gil & the Electric Vampires' was born from an idea of mine and because of the desire to blend two genres that I always loved very much: Shock-/Glam-Rock and Electronica. I grew up listening to Alice Cooper, Kiss, David Bowie, Depeche Mode and Billy Idol and thanks to this project I have the possibility to express myself within this soundscape while trying to persevere my own identity.
The project was started in 2016 when writing the first track 'Bulletproof'; on that track I did all the songwriting, the lyrics and the instrumentation by myself - the latter being rearranged and recorded with the help of excellent musicians from my area.
At the moment 'Gil & the Electric Vampires' is the project that expresses myself the most but I'm also part of the 'Dressed in Black Duo' which is an acoustic duo that focusses mainly on blues rock and with which I like rearranging songs by The Doors, Depeche Mode, Led Zeppelin and many others in a rather personal way and sound that tends towards Blues and Goth.

R: Your current single 'Bulletproof' sounds totally professional in terms of production and also the video is done very well - do you have an own little studio to record or how did you manage to produce it this way?

G: This is a very good question! Yes, I have my own studio in which I work as a music teacher and where I have recorded the guitar and bass parts for 'Bulletproof', in addition of doing the pre-production for that song. I call it by the sweet little name of 'Silver Smoke Studio' but it doesn't have a website on it's own, at least for the moment... The rest of the track was recorded and mixed at Alessandro Degiorgio's studio and he also played drums on it.
Regarding the video, I used a studio called 'mynameis'-studio [www.mynameis.it] with which I was very happy and where it was possible for me to translate my ideas into visual terms: A dive into the years of SynthWave and the 'Metropolitan Vampires'!

R: Who are the other guys playing in the video and where did you meet them?

G: Like I said, Alessandro Degiorgio is playing drums while we have Mr. Piz on bass - and obviously there is Gil...

R: What's next for you? Are there currently plans for doing a whole album or even a tour? I would really love to hear some more tunes from you and the guys!

G: Thanks for those kind words, really! Yes, I am writing some songs at the moment and I hope I'll be able to release an EP or perhaps even a whole album during this year; at this early stage I think the album could possibily be called 'Electricity'.
Obviously, there will be live gigs in support of the release and we hope to find an agreement that will make it also possible to come and visit you in person so as to give you an 'Electric Bite' :)

R: I'm so glad that during the last years there was happening some kind of glam & sleaze revival - it kind of took off when Crashdiet released their 'Rest In Sleaze' record in 2005 and then a million cool bands all over the world followed. How is this scene in Italy going? Are there some good unknown bands trying to come through to us? Is there something like a club-scene or glam parties going on in your area?

G: Unfortunately, the Italian rock scene is not that much oriented towards Glam Rock even if this does not mean that there are no good groups. For the occasion I would like to mention some emerging bands that - like us - are trying to assert themselves with tooth and nail: 'Sukende', 'The Mugshots', 'Bang Bang Vegas', 'Nero Kane', 'Wings Along Road', 'Simulakrum Lab', 'Genus Ordinis Dei',... These are just some of the projects in which excellent artists are getting crushed by a system that provides little visibility if not for very high marketing budgets.

R: What do you think of this ongoing trend of buying and collecting vinyl and even cassette tapes again? Are you diggin' it? I think it's some form of backlash against this digital world we live in today - people want to own something 'real' that they can actually touch and treasure... Speaking of this as the record collector I am myself: Can we expect some physical release from your band, too?

G: I love vinyl and any kind of physical support. From the merchandise, which I will soon take care of, to a show ticket. I'm a collector from the bottom of my heart: You got to know that of some artists I have the whole discography both on cd as well as on vinyl!
Yes, the new album will also be released in physical format. With 'Bulletproof' [the single] it did not seem worthwhile to me to do all the work for just one song, even if I must confess that there are five physical copies in existence, which are in Alice Cooper's tour bus - personally delivered by myself!

R: In your current single you sing the lines: "you need the main attraction / I got my own direction": is self-expression the main concern why you play music? How did you start and why did you pick up the guitar and microphone?

G: Excellent question - the phrase is actually referring to some situations in which I experienced people exploiting the image of important artists just to look for a sterile and useless self-affirmation of their own (very often with poor results...). For a moment you will be the main attraction - ok, no problem! - but I have my own direction, should it be right or wrong. That's all!
I started playing the guitar after being kind of musically 'kidnapped' by Queen, Bryan Adams and Iron Maiden, even if the spark that completely changed me forever arose from the likes of Black Sabbath, Kiss, Alice Cooper and all those sounds that gather around the imaginary of genres like 'Horror' and 'Thriller'.
The role of the voice was an evolution for me because in the records that I bought, in reality, the thing that was decisive for me was the timbre of the singer. From there at the age of 20 I started taking lessons until I graduated as a vocalist in a professional music school in 2010 and later on as a guitarist as well. Thanks to this development I can now follow my work as composer, session musician (live and in the studio) and also music teacher.

R: Concerning that this is a blog about all kinds of records and music: What are your five favourite records and why should we absolutely listen to them (in case we don't know them already ;)) ?

G: Eeheheh, without thinking too much about it and in no particular order I would go for these:

Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
Kiss - Alive III
Depeche Mode - Violator
Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
Alice Cooper - Hey Stoopid

R: The last question is not that serious but I kind of asked myself if the name 'Gil & the Electric Vampires' maybe is a reference to the L.A. Guns' album 'Hollywood Vampires' or some other glam / sleaze act from the 80s? How did you came up with this name in the first place?

G: As I told you I am a great lover of the 'Horror' and 'Thriller' genres in all it's forms, from the cinematic to the literary aspects, and so the idea of creating a project around the idea of 'urban vampires' could be nothing but tempting for me. I only needed an adjective to represent the rock and electronic concept and so one day, while I was listening to The Cult's 'Electric', I said: "Fuck! 'Electric Vampires' is perfect!"
I don't deny that if I could have "bought" the rights to the name 'Hollywood Vampires' from Alice Cooper I would have surely done it, but with hindsight I think no name fits as good as this ['Electric Vampires'].

R: Ok, that's all for the moment! Again, I thank you for taking your time answering these questions - I'll wait for a little gig here in Germany, maybe teamed up with 'Dobermann'? ;)
All the best for your and the band's future, Gil!

G: Thanks to you, René, for the space dedicated to me and yes, see you soon some place near you for an 'Electric Bloody Show' - hopefully in the company of Dobermann!

- VERSIONE ITALIANA -

That's all.

G: Eeheheh, senza molto pensarci ti direi, in ordine sparso:

Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
Kiss - Alive III
Depeche Mode - Violator
Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
Alice Cooper - Hey Stoopid

See you soon!
